Purpose of Elders

Announced by Anonymous on Mar 17 2014

The elder's responsibility and authority. An elder is first and foremost a spiritual leader. He is chosen "to shepherd the church of God" (Acts 20:28). His responsibilities include supporting weak members (Acts 20:35), admonishing the wayward (1 Thess. 5:12), and being alert for teachings that would create divisions (Acts 20:29-31). Elders must model the Christian lifestyle (Heb. 13:7; 1 Peter 5:3) and set examples of liberality (Acts 20:35).

Isn't it strange how some of those in leadership positions fail to remember their own shortcomings? The former drug dealer, the adulterer, all the pompous self righteous.....the past all but forgotten in their minds but pretending to be hallowed and pious, possessing the ability to "walk on water"... after all, they are elders....hoping that no one discovers their past indiscretions while ever condemning others for their own failings and circumstance (the ex-con, the homeless, the less fortunate) and discouraging them from participating within the church thus weeding out the "unworthy". How hypocritical. How unlike the teachings of Christ. How contrary to their charge as elder. How disappointing....not only to us....but to Christ himself.
